-Happy 25th Birthday Hikaru- by ~hikariix

NOOOOOOOOOOO

Okay, now that I’m done with the dramatics, I can share a bit of my thoughts after finishing Hikaru no Go. And such a good manga it was! The ending kind of caught me by surprise because I was so invested in the plot that I didn’t notice the last chapter creeping in the corner. I will need some time to recover now, heh heh.

Anyway. I have a thing for sports manga, not gonna lie. And as a sports manga, Hikago was really awesome. You know, in these sport series, whatever sport they do, the process of winning and losing, training, mental preparation etc. is always a lot like growing up. And here we got a lot of amazing growth, basically from every angle. Not only the young cast changed - adults and even spirit of a guy who killed himself 1000 years ago learned quite a bit. It wasn’t always easy, it wasn’t always pleasant but life hardly ever is, so that was fine and realistic on emotional level.

Everyone who saw my Hikago posts on Twitter could easily notice my plain and obvious Akira bias, but - in the end - the character which made the biggest impression on me was his father. Amazing player with many titles and long history as a pro. Serious guy, who knows exactly what he’s doing as a player. And yet, despite of that, he turned out to be more adventurous and young-spirited than I would expect from someone like him. I can tell that this fierce power runs in their genes, haha.

If Akira was the one who understood Hikaru the best (as eternal rivals <3), Kouyo was someone like this for Sai, as strange as it might sound. Sometimes I thought that his connection with Hikaru is a lot stronger than we would normally expect because Sai was the one who made them understand each other on some level. It sounded a lot better in my mind, actually, but what can I do?

Speaking about Sai - heh. I was sort of, kind of disappointed with his final arc and the things that happened afterwards. I thought that it was a bit underwhelming for him to disappear just like that, without some big climax-y goodbye between him and Hikaru. But this manga was always like this. It wasn’t its style to let some things hang forever, it wasn’t dwelling on stuff forever. I was disappointed in Hikaru, though. I thought that he was behaving like some giant loser and a brat (and he was a brat, I guess…) and I held it against him that he got all “I’m so sorry, Sai, I will never play again” asdffgh it’s still making me angry.

In the end, the ending was like a manga itself - there was no place for dragged out sentiments and prolonged crying or stuff. After all, it wasn’t the end for them. It was just a beginning of the eternal rivalry between Hikaru and Akira :)

天水三千 as Fujiwara no Sai from Hikaru no Go

you guys have no idea how much I want to rape this person

Please don’t use the word rape in that context. It doesn’t express admiration in the slightest, it’s demeaning and offensive.
